In the second book in Kaylin McFarren's "Threads" series, Chase and Rachel are back to recover treasure in Japan! Since their last adventure in Buried Threads, their relationship has developed into a partnership; in more ways than one.

Trident Ventures has accepted a new assignment to find another ancient treasure, the Heart of Darkness, for a Buddhist monk. On the flight to Japan, Rachel finds herself seated next to an odd Japanese man that seems to know a lot about the assignment that Rachel and Chase accepted. This odd man reveals he has an interest in the Rachel and Chase's assignment because he recovers souls, and there are plenty of souls that need to be recovered in the ruins where the Heart of Darkness rests.

Rachel is disturbed by this revelation, and becomes even more perplexed as the man tells her that her destiny is entwined with the Heart of Darkness. Rachel's curiosity overrides her reservations as she attempts to get more information about her destiny; only to discover that he knows more about her than she does.

Thinking that she is rid of the disturbing man when she lands in Japan, she soon finds out that the man she sat next to is the Buddhist monk that requested Trident Ventures' help. Even worse, Rachel and Chase are told of a prophecy that foretells the destruction of Japan if the Heart of Darkness isn't found, and soon realize that the Yakuza are interested in the treasure for reasons of their own.

How is Rachel's destiny tied to this treasure? Will Rachel and Chase succeed in their search for the Heart of Darkness, or will they meet with the same fate as their predecessors? Can they stop the destruction of Japan, or will the Heart of Darkness fall into the hands of one of the Yakuza's families?

Buried Threads by Kaylin McFarren takes readers are taken on a suspense-filled, action-packed ride as the plot reveals the stories behind the treasure, dangerous deals, lust, greed, and treachery. Besides the two protagonists, you really don't know who the "good guys" are until the end of the story.

I really enjoyed the legend of the treasure and how Kaylin McFarren wove her impression of Japanese culture into the story line. I was not impressed by the Harlequin-style sex scenes in the book; however I enjoyed this book more than its predecessor, and found it difficult to put the book down.
