The story begins in the Pacific Ocean on the Stargazer where Sam Lyons and his partner, Chase Cohen, are searching for the Wanli II; the Ming Dynastys last dragon ship. In his avidity to find the lost vessel, Chase loses sight of his partner in the gloomy depths.

With his oxygen tank nearly empty, Chase returns to the surface to discover that Sam has not surfaced, and he dives again to search for Sam. Chase soon finds Sam; however, Sam is in trouble and loses consciousness. Chase desperately tries to revive Sam underwater, but fails. Chase returns to the surface with his in tow where he and the crew try desperately to revive Sam in vain; leaving Chase to break the news to Sams daughter, and his girlfriend, Rachel Lyons. Soon after breaking the news to Rachel, Chase disappears from town and Rachel's life; leaving her to pick up the pieces and move on.

Four years later; Rachel still has night terrors about her fathers death, and is bitter about Chases abandonment. She is using her work at the Warren Nash Foundation as a way to avoid her grief over the loss of two men in her life, and has detached herself from the world around her. However, it becomes apparent that fate has other plans for Rachel when she receives a call from Dr. Ying, museum director, with a request to meet with him.

Dr. Ying has new evidence that points to the Wanli II's whereabouts, and the treasures that can be found within; including a dragon heart that was included in Mai Le's treasure. Dr. Ying revels that he has found a salvage company, Trident Ventures, that is willing to undertake the expedition, but the company needs funding due to a series of unfortunate mishaps. Dr. Ying insists that it is Rachels destiny to uncover Mai Le's treasure; however, in a seemingly cruel twist of fate, Rachel discovers that Chase Cohen is the owner of Trident Ventures. Despite her reluctance to approve the expedition, Rachel agrees to fund the expedition when she finds that her brother's life depends on the expedition's success.

Will Rachel meet the same fate as her father? Can Rachel move on from her past and work with Chase to find Mai Les treasure, or will she lose another important person in her life?

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is a quick read; I read it in less than a day. The book reads like an Indiana Jones adventure; however, unlike Indiana Jones, the "romance" aspect of the book was sexual tension that inevitably led to sex, rather than sexual tension that led to witty one-liners. The sex scenes didn't ruin the book for me, but they didn't add anything to the story line.

If you enjoy books in the romance genre, you'll like Severed Threads. While it is a quick read, it will provide you with enough action, suspense, and sexual tension to give you a little break from reality.
