On My Kindle Book Reviews, #OMKindle

It has been over a week since I went offline and I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and well wishes. While I am not fully recovered, I am able to spend some time on the computer writing and participating on social media.

To be honest, I have not been able to work on writing reviews until today. I will be posting a review tomorrow and I might be able to post a review on Friday as well; it really depends on how I am feeling.

I am a bit behind on reading, probably because I spent so much time sleeping this past week. I will try to get some extra reading done so that I can post two reviews next week.

Mobile App

I am no longer posting updates on my mobile app. I have terminated the contract with the developer. I did this for two reasons: first, there was a lack of interest in the app, over 99-percent of my followers use laptops or personal computers to visit the blog. Since the website is responsive and mobile friendly, manually posting updates to the app for less than one-percent of visitors is not really a good use of my time and energy.

Second, there was a copyright infringement issue with the app on Google Play. It seems that the screenshots that the app's developers used to demonstrate the app's functionality featured book covers. As a result, Google temporarily suspended the app until new images were submitted. The problem was resolved quickly; however, I noticed that the screenshots that were used to demonstrate the app's functionality on Apple's App Store featured book covers. When I expressed concern about the potential copyright infringement issues with those screenshots, I was advised by the app's developers that I would need to pay a fee to resolve the issue; despite the fact that I was not consulted during the app's development or the screenshots that were used.

After consulting with more experienced bloggers and receiving feedback regarding the usefulness of the app, I decided that it would be best to shut the app down.

Updates and Changes

Since I no longer have a sponsor, I have made the following changes to the blog:
  • The "Coupons" page has been deleted and the coupons that the app's sponsor/developer posted are no longer available.
  • Push notifications are no longer available.
  • The sidebar buttons for the app have been deleted.
  • The paragraphs in my privacy policy and disclosure regarding the app's sponsor have been deleted.
I also realized that one of the questions on the Featured Title Request document was not appropriate for non-fiction books, so I added another question to make it easier for non-fiction authors to participate. I will update the "Featured Title Requests" page as soon as I am able to accept requests.

Last, but not least, a start-up book promotions company approached me a couple of months ago and asked if I would be willing to write reviews for them in exchange for monetary compensation. I agreed with the understanding that the reviews I write for this company will be considered editorial reviews. These reviews will be posted on the blog as well as the company's website.

I want to be very clear about this opportunity:

I will not post consumer reviews for the books this company asks me to review on Amazon, Goodreads, B&N, Kobo, etc... I will tell you which reviews I am being compensated for at the beginning of the review. The reviews will be honest, if I do not enjoy the books or if they are not appropriate for the author's target audience, I will not recommend them. If this company decides to implement practices that are predatory or exploitative, I will leave the company immediately.

I will continue to offer free reviews on this website. While the turnover time for paid reviews will be significantly less than free reviews, my primary focus is to continue serving the indie author community in the same capacity as I have been.

I am hesitant about taking this opportunity; however, I want to pursue it in the hopes that it will allow me to contribute a bit more to my household's finances while giving me the time that I need to focus on my physical and mental wellbeing.

I am really glad to be back and will work on picking up where I left off so that I can accept review requests from indie authors who are new to On My Kindle!
