His worth will be measured by the strength of her love...

A Runaway Princess...

Tara Du'Faye, Second High Princess of the Faye, has had it with the King's demands. Fleeing the palace, she is captured by a world of savagery and black majick. She prays her warrior can find her before she is consumed by the dark walls of the Arena,

A Warrior Without A Past...

Alexios is the commander of the Faye Army, and a male, whose past is covered in darkness. Vicious in battle, deadly by nature, there is nothing he wouldn't do to ensure the safety of those he cares for. Especially, the Second High Princess of the Faye. Searching for her will change him forever as darkness draws closer to the kingdom he left unprotected.

Forbidden Love...

Can a warrior, who had deemed himself unworthy, and a princess, whose only concern is claiming the one thing she cannot have, come together in time to prevent the awakening of an ancient power that once covered the world in darkness?

Review

When Tara's older sister defied their father, the Faye king, by refusing to marry a warlock to seal an alliance, it fell on Tara, the second oldest, to fulfill her father's orders. Tara couldn't stand the thought of marrying the warlock, so she ran away from home and the warrior she loves.

Alexios, the warrior whose sworn duty is to protect Tara, searches for her and discovers that she's been captured by enemies of the Faye. His search for Tara takes him away from a kingdom threatened by a darkness intent on tapping the wellspring of power that the king and his men guard.

Will Alexios find Tara before she is sold into slavery by her captors and bring her home before darkness overwhelms the kingdom, or will he lose both his princess and his kingdom forever?

To be honest, I don't know much about the romantic fantasy genre. I've read plenty of books in which romance plays a small role in the plot, but my knowledge of plots in which romance plays a pivotal role in a fantasy setting is limited.

The fantasy aspect of the plot is compelling; the king guards a dark power that is locked away to prevent it from being used against the Faye. There is some political intrigue because the wards that prevent this darkness from escaping are weakened during a specific time. The Faye king wants to form an alliance with the warlock because he believes that the warlock can help reinforce the wards in order to keep the darkness at bay.

What is this darkness and where did it originate from? The fantasy fanatic in me would love to know but this aspect of the plot fades into the background as the author delves into the romance between a few of the protagonists. We do get some backstory about Alexios; however, given that this is the first book in the series, I think the backstories of the other protagonists should have been fleshed out a bit more before diving into the romance.

On the other hand, this is a romantic fantasy. It makes sense that the author provided us with enough information about Alexios' history to tantalize us with before plunging into the romances between the protagonists. As a result, my thoughts about this book are mixed: I see the potential for a great fantasy epic here, but it is a romantic fantasy, so the epic fantasy aspects of the plot are not as developed as I would have liked.

While the genre is not one of my favorites, the plot is intriguing and well-written with a few editing errors.

If you're a romance fan looking for a plot with an epic fantasy twist and several steamy love scenes, DarKnight: Ancient Bloodlines is an excellent choice. If you are in the mood for an epic fantasy, you may find that this book's romantic plot deviates too far from the potentially epic fantasy plot for your taste.
