Review

Jarvis Mann is working two cases at once, and both hit pretty close to home.

First, Jarvis is hired on by his friend, Bill Malone, to track down his son, Ray, who has disappeared. When Jarvis tracks Ray down, he discovers that the college football star has been in bed (literally and figuratively) with some shady and dangerous people who could do some serious damage to Ray's family and his future in football.

Jarvis' second client is his landlady, Kate Tanner, who believes that her husband is stealing money from her business and cheating on her again. Tired of his lying and cheating ways, she asks Jarvis to gather evidence against him. What should be a simple assignment becomes complicated when Jarvis finds out that Mr. Tanner owes a dangerous and perverted criminal money; a criminal who will stop at almost nothing to get the money he's owed.

In both cases, Jarvis must figure out the masterminds for the schemes in order to protect his clients, himself, and the woman he loves.

This third installment of the Jarvis Mann Detective series is more exciting and thrilling than the previous book! Both of the cases that Jarvis accepts have unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Fortunately, Weir doesn't keep readers hanging for long as the book is pretty fast-paced; leaving readers with little time to breathe, much less become bored with the plot.

As with the previous books in the series, I feel that the setting and the characters are a gritty, quirky blend of contemporary and noir. The language is definitely more contemporary; however, many of the characters' attitudes have a noir "feel" about them. This definitely made me more interested in what was going to happen to the characters, which added some excitement and suspense to an already exciting and suspenseful plot.

There is some explicit sexual discussion in the plot. I honestly don't know exactly how brutal or graphic it is, because I glossed over it while reading it. I got the impression that some parts were a bit brutal; however, I read enough to get the gist of how it related to the plot before moving on. If it's a sensitive subject for you, this is something that you want to be aware of; however, it is pretty easy to gloss over without missing crucial points in the plot.

It didn't take me very long to become immersed in the plot once I started reading because the characters are engaging and the plot is fast-paced with plenty of twists and turns. If you enjoy gritty private investigator novels and don't mind some sex in them, then you'll enjoy Twice as Fatal by R. Weir!

I live in the Mile High city with my wife, daughter and dog, where the Rocky Mountain High isn’t always achieved with an herbal substance. When not glued to the computer for work and writing, I relax by enjoying the outdoors; playing tennis, travelling in our motorhome and riding a motorcycle wherever the wind takes me. My writing beckons back to the days of detectives and dames, but with modern plots and twists. PI Jarvis Mann is tough, resourceful and a man with as many faults as virtues. HIs oddball sense of humor is much like mine, though I’m not nearly as tough and fearless as he is. Though no evil stands a chance against my written word!
