Book Review, Veiled, The Veiled Series, Stacey Rourke

Political propaganda would have us believe vampires are our friends. Fanged teddy bears misunderstood thanks to archaic lore. Activists picket for them to be welcomed into our society.

They claim vamps don't kill.
They preach we are safe.
They ... are dead wrong.

One year ago a hive slaughtered my family and left me for dead. Found by a team of scientists with their own agenda, I was forged into an unstoppable weapon.

I possess their strength, with none of their weaknesses.
I can move among them free from their crippling hunger.
I am their greatest threat.

Armed with this arsenal, vengeance will feed my desire to penetrate the seedy underbelly of their fetishized lifestyle and expose them for the monsters they truly are.

Review

Can vampires and humans truly co-exist peacefully?

After Vincenza's family was slaughtered by a hive of vampires, she was left for dead and her parents' co-workers, a group of scientists from Yale, found her. Using the knowledge they gained from the research Vincenza's parents spearheaded, they turned Vincenza into a half-human, half-vampire hybrid; creating a weapon against vampires who could infiltrate the vampire hierarchy and destroy it from within.

Fed by her hatred of vampires and seeking revenge for her family's death, Vincenza learns what she needs to accomplish the task her parents intended for another; only to discover that vampires aren't the only monsters in the fight for vampire rights.

I didn't like Vincenza at first but the more I learned about her, the more I grew to love her!

Okay... Let me be straight with you. I thought I was going to end up with a protagonist a lot like Lestat, except female. Don't get me wrong, I liked Lestat, usually, unless he insisted acting like an ass; which happened pretty frequently.

At first, I thought I'd be reading about Vincenza going on a rampage through the city in search of the vampires who killed her family and left her for dead. The rampage would have been understandable, albeit predictable; however, it was so much more than that!

Vincenza's desire for revenge guides her headlong into vampire and human politics. Vampires want the same rights as humans and some humans agree, but some disagree. Some vampires think that humans are nothing more than cattle while others want to peacefully co-exist with humans. The political intrigue in itself makes the story incredibly interesting; however, Vincenza's personal growth is what really kept me up at night reading. She begins as a resentful and vengeful character who wants nothing to do with the outside world, and she grows into a compassionate, highly intelligent character who is rubbing elbows with the upper echelon of vampire politics and society.

Throw in Rourke's talent for creating a resplendent and detailed setting coupled with impeccable dialogue and timing, and you have an absolutely brilliant story! The novel ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm dying to read the next installment.

If you enjoy vampire stories steeped in political intrigue with gory action and a surprising protagonist, you absolutely must check out Veiled!
