Axtelera Ray: The Chronicles of Astrone (Preview Edition) by Alroy Jovi & M.J. Gallagher

The story begins on August 9, 1923 in Northern India as four-year-old Robin Windsor quietly approaches his mother, Shilpa, who is sitting in a rocking chair and holding his infant brother, Aryan.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Observing the pendant around his Aryan's neck, he notices that it is similar to his; except it is set with a blue sapphire while his is set with a red ruby. Noticing Robin's interest in his brother's stone, she explains to him that these stones are birth stones, and that they have abilities that can bring the wearer good luck, or even heal the bearer. Shilpa tells Robin that he must never take the pendant off, and tells herself that the birthstone will be very special to him someday.

The story jumps forward to October 26, 2012 in Athens, Greece as Demitria Hecataki (Demi) grudgingly celebrates her birthday with friends and family at a birthday party that she is not enjoying. When she receives a call from her father, a police officer, she goes outside to get better reception. As she heads outside, she steels herself for the news; her father, a police officer, is not going to make it to the party.

Distraught by the news, she prepares to fling the plate of birthday cake in her hand; she is stopped by what sounds like a bullet flying through the air. Distracted by the noise, Demi forgets her ire with her father as she tries to determine the source of the noise. She is startled when her mother comes in search of her, and allows herself to be consoled before going back to the party. As the two prepare to rejoin the party, they notice an odd diamond-like object lodged in the cake.

A month later, Demi has a fashioned a necklace for the diamond that was lodged in the piece of cake around her neck. During a typical evening with her bossy older sister and her younger brother, the locket begins to burn and the ground trembles; Demi watches in disbelief as a portal opens and draws her in to another world where Norse mythology and reality meet.
