Two souls entangled in an eternal echo of true love . . .

Rowan and James have been drawn together in every existence since the beginning of time. But love's sweet promise is cut short after an unthinkable tragedy strikes two young families, shattering the bond in this lifetime.

Is love stronger than death? Can Rowan and James find another way to each other? Against all odds, a forgotten promise is remembered and kept, reuniting two souls destined to be together.

When Rowan trips and falls while running past the house that she and her parents were supposed to inhabit before they died, she meets an odd gal, Bella, who doesn't believe in coincidences. Bella convinces Rowan to rent the upstairs apartment that she is letting out and the two become friends.

When Rowan discovers a hidden cache of items belonging to Bella's deceased teenage brother, D.J., a man appears in her room. Thinking that he is a ghost, Rowan is determined to help him move on; however, she feels an inexplicable connection to him. When the man appears again, she tells him of her plan and finds out that he is Bella's deceased brother.

How can D.J. be dead, yet stand before her? Why does she feel so deeply connected to him?

I've read all three of the books in Riley's Sons of Odin series, and this is a definite departure from her usual writing style!

The premise is based on Pagan mythology; however, it really isn't explained in much detail. Instead, Riley focuses on building the characters; particularly the protagonist, Rowan, who much of the plot revolves around. I'm a bit disappointed by this because Riley did such a great job in creating a setting and characters in the Sons of Odin, and I would have loved to see more of that in this novel.

Cynicism about the existence of "soul mates" aside (I've only been divorced for about a month now!), I enjoyed the story. It's an entertaining, light read with only one sex scene and interesting characters. While I don't think it truly represents what Riley is capable of as an author, it does highlight Riley's ability to spin a tale that will draw readers in and it is an excellent first book in a subgenre that Riley might be unfamiliar with. I'd definitely read more like these if she wrote them!

Erin S. Riley has an undergraduate degree in psychology and a graduate degree in clinical counseling. She is also a board certified lactation consultant and has had extensive training in maternal-child health. Since Erin was a child, she has been fascinated with human nature and what motivates behavior. She enjoys writing stories that reflect real life: Erin’s books feature complicated, imperfect characters who love deeply, make reckless decisions, and try again until they get it right.

A lifelong lover of books, Erin taught herself to read at the age of four and hasn’t been without a book since. She is an equal-opportunity reader of fiction and non-fiction, and her shelves are filled with books on psychology, archeology, anthropology, and general history.

The social history of women and their place in society across the ages is a favorite reading topic of Erin’s. Erin has a bit of an obsession with all things Viking and owns an embarrassing number of reference books on the Viking age.

Erin is drawn to any creative pursuit, from making hand-stitched quilts to producing mini-movies for family and friends from home videos. But writing has always been her passion. When Erin isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her two wonderful children, reading anything she can get her hands on, watching football, and renovating her house with her husband of 17 years who just happens to look like a Viking!
