Axtelera Ray: The Chronicles of Astrone (Beta Edition) Created By Alroy Jovi, Written by M.J. Gallagher

book review, Axtelera Ray, The Chronicles of Astrone, Alroy Jovi, M.J. Gallagher, Fantasy, mythology
Demitra Hecataki is a spirited street magician from Greece who longs to escape her boring life. Victor Garnett is a popular English schoolboy with a cocky attitude and an unusual secret. When both suddenly come into the possession of mysterious crystals, it sets in motion a chain of events that are far beyond their control.

Thrust into an unknown world, the teens will soon find themselves in the midst of an adventure worthy of the old myths. Magic and advanced science thrive in this strange land, and supernaturally-gifted individuals are as common as dragons or flying horses. However, little do Demi and Victor know that just as the legendary heroes of this otherworld once boasted extraordinary abilities on Earth, so do the Earthborn here.

Review

Demi is a Greek street magician who wants some adventure in her life. Victor is an English boy and musician who secretly enjoys Norse mythology. Both find themselves in possession of crystals that whizzed into their lives out of nowhere. What they don't know is that these crystals are the key to Demi's desire for adventure and Victor's longing to know more about Norse mythology.

During a penumbral eclipse, Victor and Demi are transported to another world where supernatural abilities are common and embraced, where magic is science, and where Norse mythology is history. Victor and Demi discover the crystals they received herald a change in the new world and will help them to develop abilities that were once lost to the people of Earth.

The beta edition of Axtelera Ray delivers on what was promised in the preview edition! If it's been a while since you read the preview edition, no worries. The beta edition has the same beginning as the preview edition; which was a relief as it had been a while since I read the preview edition.

Where do I start with this review? There's a lot going on in the plot and I find myself struggling to write a spoiler-free review...

To begin, the first chapters will provide you with Demi's and Victor's backstories; who they are and where they come from. These chapters aren't very long, but Gallagher does provide more information about their backstories in later chapters through relevant and timely flashbacks during the plot. While we will learn some information about the major players in the plot, much of who they are and the part they play in this grand adventure has yet to be revealed.

The setting of the story is lush and detailed. It enhances the plot by setting the tone for what's happening in the storyline. If you're a gamer, it's a lot like finding pieces of well-written lore that tell you more about the locations you encounter. For non-gamers, I guess the best way to describe the setting is "irresistibly immersive."

I liked how Gallagher included some of the equivalents to the Norse gods and goddesses mentioned in the plot. I think it helps individual readers who may be familiar with a specific cultural aspect of a god or goddess to become more involved in the story. As a classic gamer, I also greatly enjoyed the descriptions of the beings from other realms because they are similar to the beings shown in the games I played (and still do) when I was younger.

There is quite a bit of political intrigue in the plot and I am anxious to learn how the appearance of Demi and Victor will change the political landscape of the other world that they're in. Not just that, but I'm wondering what these two are destined to become in the other world.

Yes, the beta edition does end on a cliffhanger but, even though the book has yet to be finished, the cliffhanger was incredibly well-timed. I honestly didn't feel let down by the timing of the end and I can assure you that if you decide to pledge money to Gallagher in order to read this latest installment, you won't be disappointed.
