Delusional (Control Freakz Series Book 2) by Michael Evans

On My Kindle BR's review of DELUSIONAL (CONTROL FREAKZ SERIES BOOK 2) by Michael Evans
Memories will make you.

Natalie isn’t dead, but her past is. With Protocol 00 finally having been shut down, the free will of the country was received at the price of the memories of Natalie. After being found trespassing in Area 51 she is taken as prisoner where her mind is wiped and life meets its impending doom. However, just before she is about to be executed she is broken out of Area 51 by the White Knights, where she is thrust into a war-torn land with the expectation that she will lead the overthrow of President Ash’s regime once and for all.

But although Natalie wants to help end all the destruction she feels she has caused, she wants to get her memories and past back more than anything. Surrounded by lies and manipulation, Natalie quickly realizes that no one seems to care or have answers about her past. And with the government still out to kill her, the real struggle becomes, not if she will get her memories back, but if she will live to make more.

After managing to shut down Protocol 00, Natalie finds herself imprisoned with her memories wiped. She has no memory of her part in the rebellion against the government, why she's being tortured, or why she's facing execution. Seconds before her execution, a rebel group, The White Knights, rescues her; however, it becomes apparent to Natalie that they have no intention of helping to recover her memories. Natalie finds herself coming to grips with the fact that even though The White Knights are fighting for freedom, they are no better than the government they have waged war on.

My chief criticism of the first book was that the forward momentum of the plot suffered. In this installment of the "Control Freakz" series, Evans keeps the plot moving forward at a decent pace. I was able to follow along with what was going on in the plot and Natalie's character was developed a bit more, or is it?

Natalie's memories are missing. In theory, this means that we get to see more of who she is at her core; however, she does remember what happened after her memories were wiped and most of those memories are traumatic. So, while we get to know Natalie as a person who is struggling to cope with the effects of PTSD, we don't know her as a whole because the plot focuses heavily on Natalie's inner dialogue during her downward spiral. I know it's important for us to understand what Natalie was going through; however, I think after the first couple of times of being shown in great detail what she was going through internally, the author could have just given cues to let us know when she was triggered or experiencing a flashback. Doing this would have avoided repetition, improved readability, and allowed the author to focus more on developing Natalie's core personality.

Even though this book has been categorized as "young adult," I don't think it's appropriate for readers younger than 15- or 16-years old due to profanity and generalized references to sex. New adult and adult readers will appreciate the parallels to current events that add realism to the plot's dystopian premise and setting, and the nuances of an expansive vocabulary.

If you're into heavy, thought-provoking reads in which the protagonist is in a downward spiral, I think you'll appreciate this book. If you're in the mood for something light-hearted or a book that starts out with a downward spiral that improves over time, you might want to steer clear.
