Aerisian Refrain (Beyond the Sunset Lands Book 1) by Sarah Ashwood

On My Kindle BR's review of AERISIAN REFRAIN by Sarah Ashwood
Following the prophesied Artan’s victory over the Dark Powers, the land of Aerisia is finally at rest, until ancient beings, long imprisoned, begin to stir…

Eight years after Annie Richards’ stellar voice and musical talents skyrocketed her from rural Oklahoma to international fame, haunting visions have begun threatening her sanity. While she’s returning to her childhood home to convalesce, creatures straight from her nightmares bring down her plane. Annie wakens in a parallel world, Aerisia. Here, she discovers her musical gifts translate into magical powers—the legacy of a banished race who have been invading her dreams.

Mistrusted by Aerisia’s most powerful factions because of her heritage, Annie finds allies are hard to come by. Supporting her are one Simathe warrior, Cole, who refuses to label her as evil, and one woman willing to stand against anything and anyone to help a friend: the Artan herself. Seizing control of her destiny will mean defying both her ancestors and the Aerisian leaders. Mastering her magic may mean making the greatest sacrifice of all…or risk becoming the reason Aerisia itself is torn apart.

When the famous musician and singer, Annie Richards, begins having disturbing visions and dreams, she decides that her best course of action is to take a break from the limelight and return to her home in Oklahoma. On her way home, the plane crashes and she finds herself in a new realm called "Aerisia" where she discovers that her musical talents are part of a dark legacy.

Aerisian Refrain is an enchanting novel set in a breathtaking world! While the summary and the first few chapters in the book indicate that the plot's premise is inspired by Greek mythology, you'll figure out that it really isn't. For fear of spoiling the plot, I can't say much more: however, I will say that the history of Annie's abilities is unexpected and Ashwood's explanation of these abilities is detailed and intriguing.

The world-building itself is outstanding! Whether Ashwood was following Annie's narrative on Earth or Aerisia, I was immersed in each and every moment. The descriptions of Aerisia are so intricate and detailed that I could literally paint a picture (if I was artistically inclined at all) of what Aerisia looks like, just by following Ashwood's depiction of the world. Ashwood doesn't just create a pretty scene though, there are robust societies, rich histories, and interesting myths to complement this fantastic world.

Last, but not least, the characters are splendid. Their personalities reflect their diverse backgrounds and I couldn't help but become emotionally invested in how the different outcomes would affect them. I can't wait to learn more about these characters later on in the series.

Even as I write this, I'm making plans to read the books in the prequel series, "The Sunset Lands Beyond," while keeping up with the commitments that I've already made. Seriously, Aerisian Refrain is just that good and, if you are looking for a new fantasy series to get hooked on, you really want to add this book to your list.

About Sarah Ashwood

Sarah Ashwood, author of AERISIAN REFRAIN
Don’t believe all the hype: Sarah Ashwood isn’t really a gladiator, a Highlander, a fencer, a skilled horsewoman, an archer, a magic wielder, or a martial arts expert. That’s only in her mind. In real life, she’s a genuine Okie from Muskogee who is the author of the brand new Beyond the Sunset Lands series, the Sunset Lands Beyond fantasy trilogy, the fantasy novella Amana, and A Minstrel’s Musings, a volume of poetry. She lives (mostly) quietly at home with her husband and three sons, where she tries to sneak in a daily workout or run to save her sanity.
