Soul Syndicate by Lily Luchesi & Faith Marlow

On My Kindle BR presents SOUL SYNDICATE by Lily Luchesi and Faith Marlow!
A soul is a heavy burden to bear.

There's a gala celebrating the city and many notable celebrities are attending, including a rock star, a socialite, a baseball player, and an entertainment reporter. Each one is notable in their own right, and each one holding a secret.
When they all get stuck in an elevator together after the gala is over, they think that is the worst thing that could happen to them... until the doors finally open. The world as they know it has gone, now they have poppies attached to their chest and are facing down soulless friends, family, and strangers. But they will make new allies along the way as well, including a crotchety old woman and a former drag queen.

It's a battle for the ultimate prize: their souls and the souls of everyone else on Earth. Can they save the world or will these disparate individuals kill each other first?

Review

What happens when a famous baseball player who has yet to come out, a drag queen, an entertainment reporter, a rockstar, an actress, and an activist get trapped in an elevator together? Nope, this isn't a punchline to a joke; it's the beginning of an off-the-wall and amazing supernatural, apocalyptic novel called Soul Syndicate by Lily Luchesi and Faith Marlow.

Before I begin, I want to say that different people are going to get something different from the premise. At first, the premise of Soul Syndicate seemed like it was going to be about a zombie apocalypse. Then, about a third of the way through the book, I realized my mistake and thought it reminded me more of Stephen King's The Stand, except it's way shorter and the main characters are more diverse. Why did I think it was similar to The Stand? I could tell you, but it would spoil the book for you.

All of the main characters have interesting backstories that unfold as the plot progresses. They are detailed enough to allow you to get a feel for the characters and their motivations; however, you aren't going to know every minute detail. I especially appreciated that one of the protagonists is asexual and is portrayed as having the ability to be attracted, fall in love, and experience intimacy with another person.

I have to admit, the red poppy reference confused me at first. I was an elementary school student back in the 1970s, and fondly remember receiving red felt poppies in school from the local VFW around Memorial Day. If you're unfamiliar with the "Remembrance Poppy," you can learn more about on Wikipedia. Since the reference initially confused me, I performed a quick Google search and discovered that poppies symbolize sleep, death, and peace; which made more sense than my alternate understanding of its symbolism.

Life kept getting in the way, forcing me to put the book down; I was reluctant to do so because I thought the premise and the characters were quite compelling. Each character carried a burden, a secret that they were trying to come to terms with, and I wanted to know more about the "Syndicate" and its role in the apocalypse.

While it's not a true, hard-boiled zombie apocalypse novel, I think people who read that genre from time to time will enjoy it. I also think that horror fans who enjoy a balance between drama and horror will enjoy it too. I certainly did, and I hope that Luchesi and Marlow team up again in the future!
